Water testing in Wellington: which test do you actually need?

A utility report, complimentary home screening and certified laboratory analysis answer different questions. Start with the water provider and the decision you need to make—not the largest test package.

Start with the correct Wellington water provider

Wellington publishes annual monitoring for its own public system. Its 2025 report includes disinfectants, byproducts, lead, copper, PFAS monitoring and a corrected raw-well event. Those results do not replace sampling from one home when the concern may involve household plumbing.

Wellington blends lime-softened and membrane-treated groundwater. That process can reduce hardness before distribution, but an online city estimate still cannot size equipment at one property.

Do not assume every address uses the same water source.

Wellington serves properties west of State Road 7, while its official new-resident instructions direct Olympia, Buena Vida and VillageWalk to Palm Beach County Water Utilities. Nearby equestrian properties may also use a private well. Confirm the bill or well equipment before choosing a test.

What can a complimentary home water check tell you?

A field visit can measure practical treatment conditions such as hardness and total dissolved solids, compare treated and untreated sample points, and document symptoms such as scale, spotting or disinfectant odor. Those measurements can support an equipment or maintenance decision.

A treatment-oriented field test is not a safety certificate.

It should never be presented as proof that water is free of lead, bacteria, PFAS or every other contaminant. Those questions require the correct sampling protocol and laboratory method.

Match the concern to the evidence

Scale, spots or soap residue

Test untreated hardness and record whether the result is grains per gallon or milligrams per liter.

TDS or drinking-water preference

Measure TDS at the relevant cold-water faucet. TDS is not a contaminant-by-contaminant safety test.

Chlorine-like taste or odor

Confirm the provider, compare several cold taps and review current utility information before evaluating treatment.

Lead concern

Use a certified laboratory and follow its sampling instructions. Lead cannot be identified by taste, smell or appearance.

Bacteria or illness concern

Contact the utility or health department and use certified microbiological analysis—not a hardness or TDS meter.

PFAS or another chemical

Select a laboratory certified or appropriately accredited for the requested drinking-water analyte and method.

How should a homeowner proceed?

  1. Identify the source. Find the provider on the bill and distinguish public drinking water from a private well, irrigation or reclaimed water.
  2. Read the public report. It describes the utility system, not the plumbing at one property.
  3. Document the symptom. Note whether it affects hot or cold water, one faucet or the whole home, and whether it began suddenly.
  4. Choose the narrowest valid test. Use field measurements for treatment decisions and certified laboratory testing for health-specific conclusions.
