Not all carbon filters are the same.
“Whole-home carbon filtration” does not tell you which carbon is inside the tank, how much is included or whether the system was designed for the disinfectant used by your water provider.
- GAC and catalytic carbon are both legitimate treatment media, but they are not interchangeable labels.
- Many systems blend the two to control equipment cost. A blend can work when its ratio, quantity and system design fit the treatment goal.
- The customer should receive the carbon type, blend ratio, total media quantity and tank size in writing before installation.
What is granular activated carbon?
Granular activated carbon—usually shortened to GAC—is a porous treatment material made from sources such as coal, wood or coconut shell. EPA identifies GAC as useful for taste- and odor-producing compounds, natural organic matter, volatile organic compounds and disinfection-byproduct precursors. Its capacity varies with the carbon itself, the target substance and the way the treatment system operates.
GAC is also commonly used for free-chlorine reduction. That does not mean every tank labeled “carbon filtration” is automatically designed for every municipal disinfectant or household flow rate.
What is catalytic carbon?
Catalytic carbon is activated carbon with enhanced catalytic activity. It is commonly selected when improved chloramine reduction is one of the treatment goals.
Chloramine is not evidence that public water is unsafe. EPA says water containing chloramine that meets regulatory standards is safe for normal household uses. Some homeowners nevertheless choose to reduce its taste or odor, and certain applications require chloramine reduction. The treatment method should be selected for that specific goal—not sold through fear.
The word “catalytic” alone does not establish the performance of an installed system. Carbon quantity, tank dimensions, water chemistry, service flow, contact time and replacement schedule still matter.
Why do companies blend GAC and catalytic carbon?
Cost is one reason. Catalytic carbon generally costs more, so replacing part of it with standard GAC can lower the equipment cost or preserve more margin in a package.
That does not automatically make a blended system inferior. A deliberate blend can address multiple treatment goals and provide good value. The concern begins when the company advertises “premium carbon” or “chloramine reduction” but will not identify the ratio, the total carbon volume or the design assumptions behind the claim.
A small catalytic portion does not prove that the entire bed will perform like a fully catalytic bed. Likewise, a full catalytic bed is not automatically the correct answer for every home. The equipment must be evaluated as a complete treatment system.
The missing specification: contact time
Carbon needs time in contact with the water. A tank may contain quality media but still be poorly matched to the household if water moves through it faster than the design allows.
That is why tank diameter, bed depth, total media volume, household demand and peak service flow belong in the conversation. Comparing systems by the number of “stages” or by tank color does not answer those questions.
What does “whole-home carbon” leave unanswered?
Is the tank filled with GAC, catalytic carbon or a blend? What is the source and grade of the media?
How many cubic feet of total carbon are included, and—if blended—how much of each carbon?
What tank size, service flow and treatment goal were used to select the media?
Five questions to ask before buying
- Does my utility normally use free chlorine or chloramine?
- Is this system using GAC, catalytic carbon or a blend?
- If it is blended, what is the ratio and total media quantity?
- What tank size and service flow was the system designed for?
- Will those specifications appear in my written proposal?
The bottom line
A blended-carbon system can be a sound treatment design. It can also be a way to lower equipment cost while continuing to advertise “whole-home carbon filtration.” The difference is not visible from the package name. It is found in the specifications.
Homeowners should not have to purchase the highest-priced package before learning what is inside the lower-priced system. Start with the disinfectant used by the actual utility, define the treatment goal, and ask for the carbon type, blend ratio, media quantity and tank size in writing.
