— LOCAL HARD-WATER GUIDE

Does Palm Beach Gardens have hard water?

Many Palm Beach Gardens homeowners report the household signs associated with hardness, but Seacoast’s annual compliance report does not publish one number that should be used to size every home’s softener. Test the untreated water at the property.

The short answer
  1. White scale, spotting and soap performance can suggest hardness but do not measure it.
  2. Hardness is mainly an aesthetic and operational issue, not proof that water is unsafe.
  3. A drop-count test or laboratory result from untreated cold water is more useful than a citywide internet estimate.

What is hard water?

Hardness is primarily dissolved calcium and magnesium. The minerals can form scale as water is heated or evaporates. That is why hardness often shows up first on shower glass, faucets, coffee equipment and inside a water heater.

Hardness is commonly reported in milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate or grains per gallon. One grain per gallon equals approximately 17.1 mg/L.

What signs should Palm Beach Gardens homeowners check?

White crust or film

Look at faucet aerators, showerheads, glass and the heating element of small appliances.

Spotting after evaporation

Minerals remain when droplets dry, although spotting alone cannot identify which minerals are present.

Soap and detergent behavior

Hardness can reduce lather and contribute to soap residue. Product choice and water temperature also matter.

Scale in hot-water equipment

Heating accelerates mineral precipitation, making the water heater an important place to investigate.

Do not borrow a competitor’s ZIP-code hardness number.

Seacoast blends treated water from multiple sources. Distribution conditions and existing home equipment vary. A number without a date, sampling location and method is not reliable enough for equipment sizing.

How should hardness be tested?

  1. Find a cold-water sample point before any existing softener or treatment.
  2. Flush stagnant water if the goal is to characterize the incoming supply.
  3. Use a drop-count titration for a practical field result or a certified laboratory when documentation and broader chemistry are needed.
  4. Record the unit. Do not confuse grains per gallon, mg/L and total dissolved solids.

A test strip is useful for screening but usually reports a range. For sizing, use a quantified result and include household size, peak flow, daily use and desired regeneration efficiency.

Will a softener fix every water complaint?

No. Ion-exchange softeners reduce calcium and magnesium hardness. They do not remove chloramine taste, lower TDS in the way reverse osmosis does, or establish that drinking water is free from a health-specific contaminant. A combination system may be justified, but only when each component has a defined job.

— PROPERTY-SPECIFIC ANSWER

Measure before equipment is sized.

The public utility report identifies system conditions. A complimentary home check can measure untreated hardness and TDS before any treatment recommendation.
