Does a water softener lower TDS?

A conventional ion-exchange softener normally does not produce a meaningful reduction in total dissolved solids. It removes hardness ions from service by exchanging calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium.

What changes after softening
  1. Calcium and magnesium hardness falls.
  2. Sodium or potassium rises through the exchange process.
  3. Scale-forming behavior changes dramatically.
  4. The conductivity-based TDS reading may remain similar—or even shift slightly upward.

Why this surprises homeowners

People often assume “filtered” means the meter should read near zero. But a softener and reverse osmosis have different jobs. The softener changes which ions are present. An RO membrane rejects a portion of the dissolved material from the product-water stream.

Does that mean the softener is not working?

No. Judge a softener by hardness reduction, not by TDS reduction. Test untreated cold water and softened cold water with an appropriate hardness method. A low post-softener hardness result can confirm performance even when the TDS meter changes little.

Do not use a TDS meter to diagnose softener failure.

A conductivity reading cannot distinguish calcium from sodium. It is the wrong instrument for proving hardness removal.

When reverse osmosis enters the conversation

If the goal is lower dissolved solids at a drinking tap, reverse osmosis may be evaluated. It should be sized, maintained and verified for the actual feed water and desired reduction. A whole-home softener can also protect an RO membrane from hardness scale, but one does not replace the other.
