Hard water in South Florida: what homeowners actually need to know
Hard water is mainly a measurement of dissolved calcium and magnesium. South Florida geology makes mineral-rich groundwater common, but the number reaching a home depends on its provider, source blend, treatment plant and address.
- Hardness is not the same thing as TDS.
- White scale and spotting suggest hardness but do not measure it.
- Hardness is primarily an operational and household concern, not proof that water is unsafe.
- A softener exchanges hardness ions; it does not function like reverse osmosis.
- Equipment sizing requires a current test at the property.
Why South Florida often has hard water
Groundwater can dissolve calcium and magnesium as it moves through limestone, shell and other mineral-bearing formations. Florida’s aquifer systems are strongly connected to carbonate geology. Utilities may then soften, membrane-treat or blend that raw water, which is why neighboring providers can deliver different finished hardness.
How hardness is classified
USGS describes 0–60 mg/L as CaCO₃ as soft, 61–120 mg/L as moderately hard, 121–180 mg/L as hard and more than 180 mg/L as very hard. To convert milligrams per liter to grains per gallon, divide by approximately 17.1. These categories are useful descriptions—not automatic equipment prescriptions.
What homeowners usually notice
Chalky buildup on faucets, shower glass and heating surfaces.
Mineral residue left after droplets evaporate from dishes and fixtures.
More soap may be needed and mineral soap curd can remain on surfaces.
Scale can accumulate where water is heated, especially in water heaters.
When treatment makes sense
Treatment makes sense when a measured condition conflicts with a homeowner’s priorities: scale control, fixture appearance, laundry, appliance protection or drinking-water chemistry. A cation-exchange softener is designed to reduce calcium and magnesium. Reverse osmosis addresses dissolved solids at a drinking tap. Those are different jobs.
