How should water hardness be tested?
The test should produce a hardness concentration—not a vague “hard” result—and the sample must come from the correct location. For equipment sizing, use untreated cold water before any existing softener.
Three common test approaches
Fast and inexpensive, but color blocks provide a range rather than a highly precise result. Useful for screening.
A measured sample changes color after reagent drops are counted. This usually produces a practical grains-per-gallon result for field work.
Appropriate when greater precision, documentation or a broader water profile is required.
Where should the sample come from?
Use untreated cold water upstream of the existing equipment when possible.
Compare untreated water with softened cold water.
Measure the cold supply too; the heater can concentrate or release deposits.
Remember that the utility report is system-wide and may not publish residential hardness.
How do the units convert?
Hardness is often reported as milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate (mg/L as CaCO₃) or grains per gallon (gpg). One grain per gallon is approximately 17.1 mg/L. A result of 171 mg/L therefore equals about 10 gpg.
Provider sources, treatment and blending vary. So can the plumbing and any existing equipment at the property. Use the actual untreated sample for a treatment decision.
What else is needed for sizing?
Hardness alone is not enough. Household size, peak flow, daily water use, iron or manganese where relevant, desired reserve capacity and regeneration efficiency all affect system design. Oversizing and undersizing both create avoidable problems.
